- Can we make our new year resolutions stick? Let’s try! Nathalie’s vlog #53A happy, healthy, joyous and wonderful 2024 to all of you! I hope you had a lovely holiday season and could regenerate a little bit.I don’t know about you, but I always feel a little uncomfortable with new year resolutions, since there are so many ideas and projects in my head and I have the tendency to want to tackle them all at the same time…So in order to create some space in our heads and actually stick to a plan, I’ve tried to sum up some key practices related to music that can help us actually complete our new year resulotions. No information in here is groundbreaking, but it might serve as a gentle reminder to help along the way.Hope this is useful to you! - Vlog #52 How I practice memory work with Ravel Sonatine mvt 1Practicing a piece by heart requires a great deal of effort, but there are some handy tricks to make the task easier and more comfortable. For today’s vlog, I thought it would be nice to film an actual authentic practice session for you, where I am in the process of relearning Maurice Ravel’s Sonatine by heart. This is the exact process I use to practice pieces by heart, with the only difference being that I now say my thoughts out loud so you can follow along.Feel free to skip through the video a bit, as each section has helpful tips scattered through the entire video. Let me know if this is something you like and if this is helpful! I’ll be happy to make more of these for you. Much love, Nathalie
- Diary of a concert tour in Belgium. Nathalie’s Vlog #51October was a whirlwind for many reasons, but one of the biggest was our concert tour in Belgium at the beginning of the month. Two different programs, two different venues, two different ensembles…to say it was intense and fun is an understatement. So here’s what we’re covering today: Hope you enjoy! Much love, Nathalie
- Why vlogging can help you reach new levels of artistry and musicianship. Nathalie’s Vlog #50Fifty vlogs! So many lessons learned (including to not try something new under time pressure, lol) and so many things to still discover. So far these three things have really helped me into becoming a better artist and musician, especially as a freelancer: Much love, Nathalie
- Sneaky stress-builders during music practice – neighbors. Nathalie’s Vlog #49Being an artist is a marvel and a privilege, but it does not come stress-free. Just like with any profession, a bit of healthy stress is of course fine…but it becomes problematic if it frequently establishes itself, in particular during your practice/creation time. This is the second vlog targeting these sneaky stress-builders and we’re getting a closer look at the relationship between neighbors and musicians, especially in dense cities. Hope this helps! Much love, Nathalie

- Practice tips on discovering a new composer; Carl Lafite – Lynkeu’s Lied. Nathalie’s Vlog #46On May 11, 2023 I have the privilege together with mezzo-soprano Althea Wetter to let people (re)discover Carl Lafite in Vienna. He was a Viennese composer-conductor-organist, lived from 1872 to 1944, and his music hasn’t been heard in the last 50+ years.Since some of you indicated that they like the practice tips videos, I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce this composer to you as well as give you some ideas on how to approach new music, how to support a singer well, and how to practice a similar piece. - Tips to instantly better your piano playing (demonstrated with sight-reading 😬). Nathalie’s Vlog #45In vlog #43, we tackled three things to avoid in any music practice in order to advance more efficiently, and I figured we could dive into practicing the piano a bit more deeply today! I faced a big fear of mine in doing so, namely sight-reading a piece on camera (I fear it without camera too), but I hope this will be very helpful to you and your own practice! Things we talk about:– Bach is awesome (and daunting)– Let’s skip the small notes– Use natural weight– Stay open– Trills and how to make them easier Much love, Nathalie
- How to get over the fear of being judged. Nathalie’s Vlog #44Oh my lord, this was a bumpy road to get the vlog out on time! In short, the vlog was fully made with all the bells and whistles, but the sound had a major issue caused by my camera being plugged in…and no matter what I or my boyfriend did, it remained extremely present. So I reshot the video with my phone instead of my camera to make my deadline, but it is a one-take, no re-dos, this-was-a-true-challenge-kind of video. (In the end it also was not shorter than my previous attempt, haha!) Today we’re talking fear of being judged and how to overcome that! I use three little things that help me get centered and confident enough to share my message and/or music: 1. Three helpful phrases 2. Building self-esteem 3. Comparing the you of today to the you of yesterday Please remember that you are unique, that the world needs every bit of beauty and good spirits it can get, and that it needs your unique abilities to become a better place. Hope this serves you, as always! Much love, Nathalie
- Three things to avoid in any music practice. Nathalie’s Vlog #43Music practice! It’s what makes us better at our instrument, at understanding music, at listening, at performing…at least, if done well. As with any skill, it takes time to develop good habits and I thought it a good idea to share some big traps to avoid during your practice time. Here’s what we’ll cover: 1. Perfection over musicality 2. Wandering thoughts 3. Imbalance between performance time and practice time Hope this is helpful and that you enjoy! Much love, Nathalie
- Three cool life lessons that the arts teach you. Nathalie’s Vlog #42We’re back with a vlog! - Unlocking your full potential, by letting go of fixed ideas around your dreams. Nathalie’s Vlog #41We are back after summer break! How are you all doing? In today’s vlog, I thought it appropriate to focus a bit on unlocking our potential. In my own experience, I noticed that it is very easy to hold on to a certain idea of what a dream should look like…and then a couple of weeks/months/years down the road, I realize it is actually not what fits me best. So, if you too are struggling with with living your dream instead of ‘the idea of’ your dream, then this vlog is for you!Much love,Nathalie

Hope you enjoy the mix-up!Items discussed: Scores and gear Outfit Warm-up and green room Hope this serves you! Much love, Nathalie
- How your thoughts influence your practice. Nathalie’s Vlog #36Ahhh, our lovely brains. They can work so much for us, but if we aren’t careful, it can very much do the opposite too. A couple of years ago, I really noticed how my thoughts were undermining my practice rather than helping it, and so in this vlog I am sharing what I have learned over time in order for you to avoid the same trap! If you struggle with stage fright, anxiety, stress-fueled practice or anything of the sort…this vlog is for you. Hope it helps! Much love, Nathalie

And if you have a scary moment that you’d like to share yourself, feel free to enter it in the comments below!
- Tips on how to get the Fulbright award. Nathalie’s Vlog #31First of all, I apologize for how dark the image is in this video! Night falls pretty early in Austria, so I’ll make sure to have a little bit more light next time! As for the subject of this vlog, to anyone who is interested in studying in the US, you will most definitely want to consider applying for the Fulbright grant. It is an absolutely amazing grant that opens a lot of doors, but at the same time, it’s a very competitive process. So by filming this vlog, I hope to give you the tools to win the award and help achieve your year abroad. If you have any questions regarding Fulbright, do leave them in the comments below! - Why it’s ALWAYS a good idea to bet on yourself. Nathalie’s Vlog #30You may have noticed that the theme of my YouTube Channel is growth. Growth as an artist, growth as a human being, and all the obstacles and hurdles we face along the way. I was fortunate enough to have reached a big dream of mine in 2019, when I was finally able to pursue my studies in the US. Now, it is time to embark on a new journey. This time however, it feels a bit more comfortable to be in this exact spot, right at the beginning of a big mountain that I’m about to climb. Still scary, but at least more familiar. And so if you are also finding yourself in this particular place, or if you feel like you’d love to finally put the trust in yourself that you deserve, then I invite you to watch this video and get the pep-talk you need. However, that doesn’t mean we can only learn by experiencing. In today’s video, I’m sharing three things I wish someone had told me or reminded me of while being a music student. - Three simple ways to prevent injury as a musician. Nathalie’s Vlog #27Before I’m taking my summer break, I thought it would be a good time to talk about preventing injury. As musicians we are often practicing long hours in the same position and whether we like it or not, that is devastating for our bodies. So the major goal is to keep our blood flowing throughout the day in order to keep doing what we love doing. Here are three simple ways to do just that. I hope it serves you!Much loveNathalie
- The life of an accompanist: tips on improving your sight-reading. Nathalie’s vlog #26Do you also struggle with sight-reading? Well, you’re not alone. For the longest time I’ve always felt huge anxiety come up whenever someone asked me to sight-read something. And that habit will not change within a year. But I do feel that exposing myself to more and more situations in which I need to sight-read (like being an accompanist in a music school), has taken a bit off the edge of that anxiety. So here are a couple of things that I have learned and am still learning around sight-reading. Hope it helps you too! Much love Nathalie
- How to get comfortable taking first steps. Nathalie’s vlog #25A little late, but I’m so glad it’s out here! Much love Nathalie

- What if you don’t like the music of a Great Composer? [requested video #3]. Nathalie’s Vlog #16Music is such a marvelous thing, just as people are, but it’s also human to not love the music by all composers…just like it’s human to not like all people. Totally fine! However, sometimes we need to perform pieces of composers that we don’t seem to like, even if the world has named them one of the Great Composers. And that can be a challenge. So what to do if you have to play a piece by a composer you don’t really like? I hope my answer satisfies you! Thank you to Guy Fieri for asking this question! If you have a request of your own, do leave it in the comments below, I’m always very excited to help you out! Much love! Nathalie

In this video I’m breaking down how I’m approaching a score and how I basically divide it into two main questions that need to be answered. Implementing everything you know from the beginning is such a vital part of your practice, even though it will take a lot of energy. Does that mean you will see and understand everything from the beginning? Of course not, but it will save you a lot of time if you keep your focus and concentration high. Thanks @gmanhere for requesting the video! I hope it serves you and everyone else who is watching. Much love Nathalie
- How much should we practice? [requested video #1]. Nathalie’s Vlog #13My grandfather always used to say “There’s nothing more fun than practice!” and then he would do what he loved most…and practice piano. As a kid, I had serious doubts about his priorities in life, but now that I’m older, I understand more what he meant. So how much should we practice our instruments? Well…it depends on a number of things. Here are my thoughts, I hope you enjoy!Video requested by @pietrobernal through IG. Much love Nathalie

Much love, you’ve got this Nathalie
- Why recording is so hard. Nathalie’s Vlog #11If I am very honest with you, I have to admit that recording is not one of my favorite things involving music. It is one of the aspects I feel least comfortable in, for the three reasons I’m listing in the video, and if you’re a musician yourself and struggling with recording too: I hear you! However, I also know that practice makes perfect, and that there will be a time where I feel completely at ease when recording. So with that end goal in mind, I have recorded this vlog and I have recorded some new music videos that will be released – as always – on Fridays. I hope you enjoy! Let me know if this vlog is of help to you. Much love Nathalie https://youtu.be/m_o-kRnC2oE
- Simple stretches for neck, upper back, shoulders and arms -Nathalie’s Vlog #10This is the tenth vlog! I can’t believe how fast it goes! So in order to celebrate, I thought it would be nice to instead of spending some quality time with our minds, to spend some quality time with our bodies.I do want to warn you that I am NOT a certified yoga instructor. Please do not perform these stretches if they cause you any pain or hurt you in any way. However, as a musician, I do try to be very aware of my physical health and these stretches help me keep my body open and (more) relaxed. I hope these stretches do the same for you! Much love Nathalie Music used during the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx5Mh…

- Three tips to help you stop overthinking – Nathalie’s Vlog #8Ahhh aren’t we all fed up with that inner critic of ours. It’s natural to have a little voice in our heads that questions what we are doing, but if not moderated well, this can turn into a real problem. Anxiety, health issues, sleeplessness, these are only a couple of the symptoms and life is just too short to be beating ourselves up in our own heads. So from one (almost) former overthinker to another: here are three things that have helped me on my journey to overcome my own inner critic. I hope you enjoy and find this useful! Music used during the video: S. Rachmaninoff – Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, directly cut from this live recording https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx5MhDaBOHc&t By the way, do you guys like the new thumbnail format? Let me know! - When your plan blows up in your face, do these 4 things…[motivational video] -Nathalie’s vlog #7If you have a soft spot for planning, you might have a list with all the steps you thought of in order to reach your ultimate goal in a smooth way. But often times, an uncontrollable factor throws you off balance, your nice list gets blown to pieces, and you can start from scratch. In many ways, that’s life! But sometimes you just need someone to give you a little energy to pick up the pieces, brush yourself off, and keep going. So this one is for all of you who are facing a blockade on their road to awesomeness. I hope it helps! The blog post I’m mentioning in the video is accessible on this link: https://nathaliematthys.com/per-aspera-ad-astra/ Music used during the video: S. - When facing the unknown. Nathalie’s Vlog #6I know I know, I’m late! But nevertheless, thanks to online ordering and delivery, my dear laptop could charge and I could render the video! Today I’m talking about change. Big change, small change, fun change, not-so-fun change…it’s a major part of life and even though we might realize this truth, we can still be scared of what’s to come. Normal, yes, but sometimes hard to deal with. So here are 4 tips on how to deal with change and the fear that comes with it. Hope you enjoy! Music used during the video: S. However, even if your interest is in an entirely different field, I think this might still help you out to take the first steps in the right direction. Music used during the video: S. Rachmaninoff – Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, directly cut from this live recording https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx5Mh… Let me know if this video is of help to you and feel free to share your experience in the comments below. As this is as much of a learning process for me as it is for anyone, I would love to hear and learn from you! Stay healthy and safe! Much love Nathalie
- Handling perfectionism. Nathalie’s Vlog #4We’re used to the haircut and there were far less “uhms” but MAN, there were a lot of distractions too! In any case, here are some of the things I do to deal with my own perfectionism. A trait that sometimes is a blessing, but can also be majorly crippling. As with all my vlogs so far, it really is not the end of the conversation and there is loads more to be said and explored, but if you feel like you can’t find your way out of self-critique, I hope this video helps you out and makes you feel like you can get out of the negative spiral. Here’s to aiming for the best without caring about perfection! Also special shout-out to my lovely boyfriend who was kind enough to lend me his glasses for the thumbnail 🙂 Music used during the video: S. Rachmaninoff – Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, directly cut from this live recording https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx5Mh… Let me know if this video is of help to you and feel free to share your experience in the comments below. - Self-discipline when laziness wants to take over. Nathalie’s Vlog #3Okay, so I have to confess that my face is not used to the new haircut yet…and my hair made my nose itch almost continuously which was wildly distracting. I probably edited out 25+ “uhms” haha! Anyway, today we’re diving in a little deeper on self-discipline. These days it can be extra hard to feel motivated, both as a musician and as a non-musician, so I thought about four things I do daily to keep working and keep improving. Nathalie’s Vlog #1I have been debating with myself on uploading videos like this for SO LONG… So what better subject to kick-off this new chapter than facing your fears and chasing your dreams. Take that, self-doubt! Today I’m sharing three things I do and/or try to maintain in order to reach my potential and achieve the goals I want to achieve as a human being and as a musician. Some days these three things are easy to uphold, other days it’s a real struggle, but the most important thing is to keep trying and to keep your eyes on the prize.
